Importance of Water filter

The water today is far away from being sufficiently pure for drinking but, contains various contaminants and harmful chemicals. Pollution of water is often considered as a result of different human activities. Sometimes it is very difficult to detect polluted water, because there may be visible as well as invisible particles mixed in it. Scientists have found that toxicity of water can cause different types of cancer.
Leading cause of epidemic in many countries is considered due to the consumption of contaminated or polluted water. Clean and pure drinking water is an essential component for a child`s physical and mental growth. So, we require purifying the water to make it safe and contamination free before drinking. Water filter is used for domestic purpose that came into existence during the eighteenth century. During this period, slow sand filters were developed and used to purify water, contaminated by sewage. First slow sand method for the filtration of water was invented by Allen Hazen of New York in 1897.

Features of water filter
Generally a water filter is used to purify the contaminated or dirty water by using some simple devices and methods. Simple water filter use devices like slow or rapid sand water filter, cloth filter, micro-porous ceramic filter etc.
A simple portable water filter which has compatibility to filter small quantity of water is a useful appliance for the trekkers. Army personnel and trekkers usually go to the remote areas where the water is not sufficiently clean for human consumption. A portable filter for water could be of great help to deal with such situation to ensure clean drinking water. They can collect the water from any source and filter it with the help of a water filter before consuming.

Apart from filtration of drinking water, the process of filtration is also used in chemistry to separate mixture of chemicals having different chemical composition. This is a technique used in chemistry to purify chemical compounds.

There are various methods of filtration, but the basic motive is to separate impurities from the aqueous solutions. Different methods of filtration are used in different situations depending on the types of impurities mixed in a solution.
